for chuck hagel in the long run. first of all, are the american people paying attention to this? i mean, i think if you could get the american people involved and they start representatives and say i have a problem with this or i light chuck hagel, then it becomes a hotter topic and you might see some sort of possibility that it doesn't happen. but if you don't get the american people involved, i think it is an easy situation for him. people talk about political capital. why would the president do this kind of fight? he was elected for four more years. to me, this president has shown in the first four years that he's willing to go to battle for these types of things because remember when he won the first election, one of the first thing he said was "i won the election." >>steve: after george bush and george bush lost all his political capital by the time katrina hit. he was not able to use his political capital to get social security passed. that was after winning the election and beating john kerry. >>brian: what is wrong -- what are the challenging things about senator hey dell? number o

. this will be announced at an event this afternoon. he is nominating chuck hagel as his next defense secretary. both must be confirmed by the senate. obama considered brennan for the top cia job in 2008. there were questions about his connection to enhance interrogation techniques. the associated press says brandy knight involvement -- brennan denied involvement. chuck hagel will be nominated as defense secretary today. here is that story from "u.s. today." this is seen as controversial. president obama's choice of chuck hagel to leave the defense department likely size of a contentious nomination fight in the senate. this came up yesterday in a sunday talk show. senator lindsey graham addressed it on cnn. >> chuck hagel if confirmed to be secretary of defense would be the most antagonistic secretary of defense for the state of israel in the nations history. he has said you should negotiate with iran. sanctions will not work. israel should negotiate with hamas. he also is one of 12 senators who refused to sign a letter with the european union to designate hezbollah as a terrorist organization. he has sev

confirmation process for chuck hagel. we were talking a lot about this yesterday. also some other nominees as well. but you say the white house is looking forward to these fights. why would that be? >> no, that's exactly right. this is a real window into why the president made this tough choice of chuck hagel. and that is we talked to people around the white house who said that the president wants fights with congress. and there's both a short-term strategy here and a long-term strategy. in the short term, the president wants to take advantage of the fact that he's the only person in these negotiations who's not running for re-election. so he can afford to be tough. he can afford to stand up for what he said. second, simple contempt by the president. these republicans who lost to him so badly in 2012, in his view, just won't take yes for an answer. so there's a little bit of exasperation by the president. but pull back the camera, and you see the bigger strategy, which is looking ahead to the midterm elections in 2014. by picking tough fights with the hill, the president uses his office to

to me that jack lew kept moving the goal posts on them. yes, there will be opposition. for chuck hagel, no. i believe in the end jack lew will get confirmed. but i'll tell you this, the reason the white house put off the announcement of jack lew until tomorrow is because of the fiscal cliff. they didn't want it to get involved in the negotiations for the fiscal cliff. they felt that they already had a fight on their hands. they didn't want to add any fuel to the fire on that, which is why they've held off of the nomination until this week. they do expect him to get confirmed and so do i. >> john kerry, secretary of state. we've got a lot of white males, shall we say, chuck hagel, we have pictures up there. jack lew, eric holder is over at the justice department. he's not a white male. he's an african-american. but no women. >> men. men. >> i want to put up another picture of the seen yr staff, if you will. there you you he sue the staff. there's been mur muring that there's not enough women part of this white house, the inner circle. what are folks saying about that? >> the visual you

, the front page of the washington times, nomination of chuck hagel, a republican, to head the pentagon. that's where the confirmation hearings will take place, before the senate armed services committee. the "washington times notes that several other republicans on the committee which will hold the hearings as already indicated they intend to -- have already indicated they intend to vote against chuck hagel. and regarding john kerry, swift boat veterans for troop helped to sink john kerry's bid for the white house years ago, but the group has decided it will not try to torpedo his nomination to head up the state department. today's's a story in new york times opinion pages. chuck hagel under attack again, a story about his service in vietnam, something that many of you might know about -- might not know about. the soldier was on fire, yet he instinctively reached for the unconscious 19-year-old gun runner caught in the burning steel cage and rescued him. the story goes on to say that it was the brother of chuck hagel. the two of them serve side-by- side in a unit of 12 at times because of ca

speaking with authority, but is this not another good reason for chuck hagel's nomination because he, unlike so many of his fellow republicans, prefers to act cautiously when it comes to these forays over seas? >> well, two things. he prefers to act cautiously using war as a last resort instead of a rather more immediate choice as had been the case over the last decade, but he's also a big supporter of working multilaterally and that's why he had been so critical of the bush administration in iraq. the problem wasn't necessarily that going into afghanistan too quickly. it was that we got distracted for all those years in iraq and let the situation in afghanistan deteriorate. chuck hagel was right at the time in criticizing the bush administration on this. that's why it has long struck me you would want a man who does not want to rush into warfare as a first resort sitting there in charge of the pentagon. >> right. mike, on a slightly broader scale, are you at all concerned that this president's rightful desire to get our troops out of these entrenched and intractable conflicts, that

're about to see on capitol hill with confirmation hearings when they get under way with chuck hagel and others. >> yeah, john brennan. the president getting pushed back on his choice for cia director and defense secretary. both men now having to defend their records and some controversial statements in their past. we'll get the latest, straight ahead. >>> also ahead, emotional testimony at a preliminary hearing tied to that shooting massacre at a movie theater out in aurora, colorado. from the first police officers to arrive on that scene, what one young officer thought as he came face to face with the suspected gunman. >> on a different note, a different approach to fitness. a lot of folks walk into the gym and feel intimidated by the perfect bodies all around them. now there is a gym that is only for people who need to lose a lot of weight. if you're thin and trying to stay in shape, this is not the gym for you. we'll get into this new idea. >> but will those rules make it easier for people who really have a problem to get the job done? we'll see what that's all about. >>> and one

secretary of state colin powell. the retired four-star general called chuck hagel "supremely qualified" in his words to be the next secretary of defense. powell and hagel are both vietnam vets and both republicans, but powell had some harsh words for their party saying the gop should take a very hard look at itself. >> there is also a dark -- a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. what do i mean by that? what i mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities. >> powell says he is still a republican but that his party's shift to the right has caused it to lose elections saying it has to change along with the country's population. >>> in india tonight, there is new outrage over a new incident of sexual attack. six men are behind bars tonight. police say a 29-year-old woman was brutally assaulted by a group of men including the driver of a bus on which she was traveling. last month the brutal and ultimately deadly attack against another woman on a bus caused worldwide condemnation and protests. >>> in moscow thousands of russians on behalf of americans are outra

. >> what do you think the confirmation of chuck hagel depends on? >> i think it depends on vincing the number of members of the senate particularly senator schumer, that he's got a balanced approach to the middle east, that he has the right temperament, the right background. i think -- i start with the premise that he's the president's nominee for the president's cabinet. i have a different standard. i think the president -- there's a presumption that the president should be able to appoint his own people. judges are a little different because that's lifetime tenure. that continues into a different presidency. but i think it's going to depend a lot on conversations that chuck -- that chuck hagel has over the next couple of weeks. i'm reserving judgment myself. i'm on the armed services committee and will hear the nomination. i'm going to have some questions. i will probably be meeting with him later this week, and i want to understand where he's coming from. but he's a solid guy with a lot of strong support, and the other thing i want to listen to is from peop

of defense chuck hagel. both are likely to favor a faster withdrawal of u.s. troops. and the white house has left open the possibility that the u.s. may not leave any troops in afghanistan harris? >> i understand that critics are very concerned about that plan because they say it could be very risky. >> concerned that the u.s. needs to make sure over the next couple of years that as we leave, we make sure al qaeda isn't going to move back into afghanistan. i think all americans want our troops home. keep our troops there safe. when you reduce your number complete, coordinated with the afghan authorities and filled by terrorists. >> president obama says the goal of making sure al qaeda al qaeda to launch afghanistan quote within reach. harris? >> so he met with president karzai yesterday and then i understand president obama had a meeting at the pentagon having to do with some of this. what you can tell us about that. >> the white house says this was really a fitness test at the health clinic at the pentagon today. part of the medical checkup coordinated by a doctor. the president was there a

, moving on to chuck hagel. he's been described as you know as a homophobic anti-semitic lover of hamas. doesn't this come down to where he said this about the pentagon. it is bloated and needs to be pared down. that's his greatest sin isn't it? >> that is one of them. i think the other was questioning the iraq war and eventually coming out and opposing the iraq war and saying after he cast the vote in favor of the iraq war, coming back and saying you know what? this was the wrong move. that created a lot of animosity. and we have seen criticism from the left. i do want to see a confirmation process. i want to know how he'll behave towards lbgt members of the military. >> and he has already apologized for those statements. >> absolutely. absolutely. but the charges that -- i mean, the thing that has really been ludicrous is because he hasn't been with mccain and lieberman an every vote in israel, not only is his anti-israel, he's anti-semitic. i think that shuts down any debate on the topic. >> had a change of heart as he was saying on the iraq war. and as peter binehart writes on the d

on chuck hagel. why do you think he should be confirmed? >> i think there are a number of reasons. first, i think he has had a very, very distinguished public service record that he can stand on. there are a lot of comments about different things he said over the years and i think he will have a chance to respond to all those comments as the confirmation hearings. but it might be useful just to stand back and take a look at this man overall a young man who volunteered to go to vietnam. they wanted to send him to europe, a nice, safe, place, he wanted to go to vietnam. he and his brother went. they were both wounded, he was wounded twice. came back to vietnam, went to school on the gi bill, veterans administration. from there went to other things in life. he supported president reagan in his run for office and as a result of that, he received an appointment as deputy director of the veterans aminute station to show you the kind of courage this guy has what happened he believes in he quit after one year because he felt the veterans administration was not doing a good job for veterans answered

today, president obama is expected to nominate former republican senator chuck hagel as defense secretary. republicans call him a controversial in your face pick. he criticized the iraq troops that opposed unilateral sanctions as iran and he once said that being gay impended effectiveness. there have been people on both sides of the aisle who have been mad about this. >> so what's the point? it's so weird, isn't it? >> that they've chosen him? >> yeah. both sides, neither side. sometimes you pick a republican that is bipartisan, but this is the one republican that most republicans -- >> he likes him for some reason. >> and it's going to be a battle. why do you like him? >> i don't like him. i don't know if i like him or don't like him. >> with all the act money and everything, why do we need a controversial pick for this? when neither the democrats nor the republicans seem to want him. it's going to be a protracted battle. >> i don't think you want to get in the middle of that. >> he served with valor in vietnam. that's part of why he's standing by him. but you would initially t

, pay our debt. >> let me talk about chuck hagel who is criticized today by cardin by a conservative here. in the mainstream of the democratic party in the senate. one of the things she raised is the comment chuck hagel made about james harnel. i'm wondering if you can help me understand. she made those comments 15 years ago and didn't apologize for them until a month ago it was clear that he was named secretary of defense. why is there that kind of a delay and did he explain why 50 years of those comments -- >> i think that senator chuck hagel was very clear that he thought those comments were not appropriate. he regretted them and they don't represent the to tell the of his views. i would point to the statement that he made. senators will have an opportunity for the confirmation process as they do traditionally and routinely to ask him questions about his views on the issues. the secretary of defense, senator hagel, when he is confirmed, as we hope he will become carried out the president's policies. and i think the president's policies on lgbt issues are most commendable, supporte
